🧘🏻‍♀️ Let’s talk about Carpe Diem at work

Have you ever attended a meeting but weren’t able to retain any information because you were thinking about something else? Or have you ever completed a task without even realizing its purpose? Don’t worry, it happens to everyone. Let’s talk about the importance of mindfulness in the workplace!

In this article you will learn...

    • To become aware of your actions, thoughts, and emotions in the workplace.
    • Mindfulness exercises you can incorporate into your routine.
    • Key benefits: stress reduction, greater concentration, improvement in emotional intelligence and leadership.
    • The importance of the work environment to enhance concentration and well-being.

In 2010, a Harvard study showed that almost half of the time we are awake, our mind wanders from what we are doing. And the most curious part? We feel less happy when our mind is scattered than when we are present. This is where the importance of practicing mindfulness and focusing on the present arises—or, in other words, mindfulness.

What does mindfulness at work consist of?

Mindfulness in the workplace means being fully aware of what we are doing at every moment. It is about observing our thoughts, emotions, and actions without judgment, paying attention to each task, meeting, or interaction with other people in the workplace. Don’t get confused, it is not a relaxation technique, but rather a tool to improve attention, be more productive, and build quality professional relationships.

How to practice mindfulness at work?

Here are four simple practices you can incorporate into your workday:

Take time for short mindfulness exercises

Let’s be realistic, we don’t always have time for long meditations, but we can take a few minutes to focus on our breathing and our senses. Here’s an exercise for you:

    • Sit with good posture and pay attention to the sounds around you. In just two minutes, you’ll enter a state of full awareness that will help you live in the present.

Be aware of what you are doing

Being present means living each moment consciously. When you talk with your colleagues, pay attention to their body language, tone of voice, and what they are really saying.

    • If you are at your desk, notice the sensation of contact between your body and the chair. When you notice your mind wandering, bring it back to the present.

Make a list of things you are grateful for

In our daily lives it’s easy to focus only on what goes wrong. Taking a moment to recognize what is going well helps maintain a more balanced view of reality and, even better, gives you a good boost of motivation.

    Avoid multitasking

Replying to emails during a meeting or checking chats while eating may seem productive, but it actually reduces your concentration and efficiency.

    • Next time you find yourself distracted between several tasks, decide what you need to focus on and give it your full attention.

💡 The more you practice these four actions on a regular basis, the more you will train your mind to be present at work and the more you will notice the benefits of mindfulness in the workplace.
